Breast Reduction
What does it try to accomplish?
Reduces the size of large, droopy breasts to more normal proportions.
How is it done?
The nipples are moved upwards and the excess breast tissue and skin are removed The skin is then brought together below the nipple.
How long does the operation take?
3 hours
How long is the stay in the clinic?
Usually 2 nights.
What type of stitches are used?
Mainly dissolvable with sometimes thin plastic stitches around the nipples.
How long are they left in?
Up to 2 weeks.
What type of dressing is used?
Sticky paper tape and a bulky padded bandage. Then a supporting bra is fitted on the day after the operation.
How long is it left on?
The bandage is removed the following day and the bra is then worn for 6 weeks. The paper tape is removed at 2 weeks.
Is there any bruising?
Moderate.
Is there any swelling?
Moderate.
What pain will there be?
Usually slight.
Where are the scars and how bad are they?
Around the nipple then straight down to the crease and a long scar in the crease. Scarring is usually quite significant, but is usually hidden by any ordinary bra.
How long does it take to recover?
Usually back to work in 2 or 3 weeks.
When is the final result seen?
Improves for up to 2 years.
How long does it last?
Permanent.
Common Complications

Bruising and swelling can be severe and sometimes there is neuralgic pain. Healing may take longer than usual. |

Sometimes the scars are poor and need to be improved. It is not usual for the breasts to be perfectly symmetrical. Nipple sensation is often reduced. |
