Lip Increase (Cheiloplasty)

What does it try to accomplish?

Makes the upper lip full if it is thin. In older patients it can be done a few months before a dermabrasion of the upper lip and it can be very rejuvenating. This operation is only suitable for patients who wear lipstick.

How is it done?

A strip of skin is taken away from above the lip so that the lip’s upper border is raised and rolled upwards and outwards.

How long does the operation take?

¾ hour.

How long is the stay in the clinic?

Usually day case.

What type of stitches are used?

dissolvable.

How long are they left in?

They are not removed. They dissolve slowly.

What type of dressing is used?

Sticky paper tape.

How long is it left on?

1 week.

Is there any bruising?

Usually slight.

Is there any swelling?

Moderate

What pain will there be?

Slight.

Where are the scars and how bad are they?

A scar line runs along the top of the upper lip. It is normally disguised with lipstick. Permanent makeup in the form of a pinky-brown line usually disguises it very well.

How long does it take to recover?

Few days.

When is the final result seen?

When the scar fades, at 6 months or so.

How long does it last?

Permanent.

Common Complications
Early: The scar may become uneven and lumpy and hard to disguise but will improve in time. There may be patches of numbness on the lip. The lip may feel tight on smiling.
Late: Occasionally poor scarring or minor asymmetry may need adjustment.
