Otoplasty What does it try to accomplish? Makes ears which stick out and cause embarrassment lie closer to the side of the head. How is it done? Incision on the back of the ear flap, then the “spring” of the gristle of the ear is weakened and it is formed into a new, flatter shape. How long does the operation take? About 1 hour. How long is the stay in the clinic? Can be day case or 1 night. What type of stitches are used? Dissolvable. How long are they left in?
What type of dressing is used? Padded bandage for 24 hours, thereafter a bandage or elasticated headband needs to be worn over the ears at night. How long is it left on? 6 to 8 weeks at night. Is there any bruising? The ears will be quite bruised for about 10 days. Is there any swelling? Usually confined to the ears only, but can be quite marked. Usually gone by about 2 weeks or so. What pain will there be? None immediately after the operation, but the ears are likely to be painful and tender for about 2 weeks. Where are the scars and how bad are they? Insignificant scars in the fold behind the ears. How long does it take to recover? 10 days or so. When is the final result seen? About 2 months. How long does it last? Permanent. Common Complications
